Etude: Whirlwinds

This piece has continuous swirling quintuple subdivisions, making it an excellent rhythm study on many levels. Because of the chromaticism the quintuplets won't necessarily be heard distinctly, but lots of steady practice is needed in order to keep the pulse flowing and to line up rhythms with the melody. This piece has continuous swirling quintuple subdivisions, making it an excellent rhythm study on many levels. Because of the chromaticism the quintuplets won't necessarily be heard distinctly, but lots of steady practice is needed in order to keep the pulse flowing and to line up rhythms with the melody. The piece is most successful with lots of rubato to reflect the whirling wind, but this is also only achieved after the subdivisions and passagework have been mastered (as with most pieces requiring rubato).
