Ilhan Baran (1934-2017) is from the second generation of Turkish composers who were trained primarily in Western music. He was born in Artvin, Turkey on the eastern Black Sea coast and often draws on the melodies and rhythms of the region's folk music in his piano music. This set of 9 Children's Pieces introduces the late elementary player to various modes, irregular rhythms and quartal harmonies typical of Turkish instrumental dance music.
