The second piece from Kathryn's set of Impromptus draws on polyrhythms played on gangokui (bells) and axatse (shakers) in West African drumming ensembles. The original title (Bells & Shakers) made reference to this aspect of the music, but the new title "Fireflies" more closely fits the imagery of the other Impromptus. While the piece is only in a two-part texture suitable for late intermediate players, mastering the rhythm is challenging!

Etude: Whirlwinds

This piece has continuous swirling quintuple subdivisions, making it an excellent rhythm study on many levels. Because of the chromaticism the quintuplets won't necessarily be heard distinctly, but lots of steady practice is needed in order to keep the pulse flowing and to line up rhythms with the melody. This piece has continuous swirling quintuple subdivisions, making it an excellent rhythm study on many levels. Because of the chromaticism the quintuplets won't necessarily be heard distinctly, but lots of steady practice is needed in order to keep the pulse flowing and to line up rhythms with the melody. The piece is most successful with lots of rubato to reflect the whirling wind, but this is also only achieved after the subdivisions and passagework have been mastered (as with most pieces requiring rubato).
