Online Assessments

In response to the current humanitarian crisis in Turkey, we are offering free assessments to all students. If you are not affected by the earthquakes directly but would like to make a donation, we will forward your donation to relief efforts in Turkey (via International Red Cross or other organizations).

Please use the simplified submission form below:

Sonic Crossroads now offers online assessments for piano performance (solo and duet) and for composition, improvisation and sound design. Students are encouraged to select repertoire that explores a range of styles. Please consider the suggested repertoire lists for ideas. Students are also encouraged to perform original works as part of the performance submission!

Submissions are accepted four times a year with the following deadlines:

November 1, February 1, May 1 , August 1 (Of course you may submit early for the next deadline, but your assessment may be delayed based on reviewer availability.)

For solo performance assessments, please submit a recording without edits of 3 to 5 pieces Students should select an appropriate and consistent level for their repertoire:

1) early elementary, 2) elementary, 3) late elementary, 4) early intermediate, 5) intermediate, 6) late intermediate, 7) early advanced, 8) advanced, and 9) pre-college.

For duet performance assessments, please submit a recording without edits of 2 to 3 pieces Students should select an appropriate and consistent level for their repertoire: (same categories as for solo performance above)

For composition assessments, students should submit a PDF file of one score, either in handwritten manuscript form or as an engraved score. Because compositions can include multiple skill levels, the categories are less important for assessment. Students may submit multiple pieces in any of the three categories for assessment: Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced.

Additional composition submission types are: Improvisation, Electronic Music, Sound Design. These are submissions that do not have a notated score but that also demonstrate original composition. Unlisted YouTube videos should be submitted for these categories. (The electronic music / sound design categories need not have a video component. For example, a still photo will suffice).

Performance recordings must be without edits and should be submitted as an unlisted YouTube link.

There are three passing assessment grades: 'Satisfactory,' 'Good,' and 'Excellent.'

Students will receive certificates recognizing their accomplishment along with comments by a qualified judge. Our judges are experienced performers and composers who will offer rigorous but also inspiring feedback for students at any level.

Fees for each entry type and level are:
